Starting a creative business from my home has been a dream of mine for a long time. With the St. Louis Arch my inspiration, my brother helped me design a logo, and the name Hold It Right There came to me and stuck. This idea remained in my sketchbook until I took an upholstery class five years ago. The class reignited my love of sewing. Using principles I learned in class, I began designing bags. I read everything I could about creating bags and experimented every chance I got.

At one point, I wanted to make a green purse for myself, with birds in the print. Googling this, I landed on Jennifer Paganelli’s gorgeous fabrics. I was enchanted by the exquisite illustrations of birds and vibrant green and blue colors. I placed my first order for Sis Boom fabric and was hooked. I now have a towering stash! I am captivated by the color palette Jennifer uses. I love the celebratory, joyful and playful feel to her fabric collections. I might be having a stressful or maybe mundane day, but the Sis Boom bag I’m taking around with me reminds me there is beauty and wonder.

While I have made many, many garments in the past, my passion is designing and creating bags. I love that bags do not require altering. They are one size fits all! And, a fun accessory is like carrying a piece of useful artwork with you throughout your day. I also love the versatility of bag design — there’s really no end to combinations and styles. Designing sewing patterns for bags is the best of all worlds for me. I can continually experiment with new bag designs. Translating the physical bag into written instructions and illustrations taps my background in teaching and experience in graphic design. It is incredibly rewarding to see another individual’s version of my pattern design!

I’m finding my dream of a creative home business is a journey. It often takes place in snatches, behind my sewing machine at my dining room table between meals with my husband and kids, or on my laptop during my children’s music lessons. I think more than anything else, it grows me in new and surprising ways.

I love sewing. This is no surprise! But, I do think I may have given up long ago had my mom not encouraged me, helped me when I was completely frustrated with a sewing project, and taught me many tricks and tips, especially in fabric layout. (She is meticulous in matching prints; all her plaids chevron perfectly!) She bought me my first sewing machine when I was in a teenager and wore the tops I made for her.

My newest pattern in the works started as a birthday present for my mom. I will name it after this spunky, energetic, creative, cheerful, friendly woman I have the privilege of calling mom. Stay tuned for the release of Gabrielle!

West Indies Vacation..Free

Ok so I took a bit of advertising liberty but made you look!!!!  I think if Sis Boom calculated all the fans around the world Australia would be the most highly populated.   They love us!!!  Well I found a new friend that I want to introduce to you that is part of that Sis Boom subculture and love how she works it..Love the Joel Dewberry woodgrain and how it picks up that green in West Indies. Mandalin is from you guessed it Australia!!  I just wanted to show you her patchy work and how beautiful West Indies looks!!! These fabrics are now on sale in most places so stock up!!! Mandalin thanks for sharing your enthusiasm of West Indies with your readers and the winner gets to stay with you in Australia!!  Forgot to mention that!! JK

I love this machine reminds me of an Easy Bake on so many levels!!! I love applique, I love it on ticking something wonderfully appealing about the old with the cut outs!! Oh  and please forgive Penelope she wanted so much to be in the photo and was a little concerned that you may not see her if she wasn’t directly in front of the camera..oh well you get the point.  I also used the appliques on squares of green to give them some contrast on the ticking.  Anyway I’m pleased as punch and hope you are too.

Dressing up!

Sew Mama Sew Thanks for carrying Girls World at such a great price.  So those of you who have been holding out to purchase this fab (I’ve been told ) book please put together a nice package for yourself.  In the cart put the book, 5 yards of Chandler in Brandy and create the Josie, or the Mary Fancy Dress inside the book (make them long to the floor if you like, that’s why the extra yardage!)  and make one happy little girl! Look at Miss Abby!!!  Thanks Sew Mama Sew you mean so much to us and we love your new book store!!  Photo by Tim Geaney!!

Garden House

Everything about her screams chic!  Simone of Garden House Designs and Brooch the Subject just has a certain vibe that is totally unique.  She loves mixing up her favorite designers with brocades, silks, ribbon, vintage jewels and putting the glam on a lifestyle fabric.  She takes license to take these fabrics to another level which is that wonderful stroke of genius she possesses and gives others permission to do the same.  She doesn’t box cotton fabrics into a predestined aesthetic she pushes the limits and shows us their humble richness.  We are talking $10.00 per yard folks!!! or less thank you Etsy!! It truly is the best kept secret and yes it still is a secret to the masses cause when I tell folks how much they are per yard I get “How much are they originally???”  most of the world has never heard of this!!!! I also love the addition of white to this patchworked tablecloth just says..luxurious!!! I have been traveling the world ( I’ve been know to exaggerate ) with Earth Angels and Country Living and can tell you folks out there eat up these fabrics when you put them out front.  So Simone thanks for the beauty and inspiration. All my love, Jennifer
